  1. CHESS88.EXE      9728  03-04-84  Chess88 is an amazing game. The program is
  2.                                | only 9k, which is very tiny by today's
  3.                                | standards, yet it has great graphics and
  4.                                | plays a decent game for all but hardened
  5.                                | tournament players. It first appeared in
  6.                                | 1982 and for years remained the best
  7.                                | pd/shareware chess game available.
  8. EDCHESS.EXE     63406  03-18-92  Ed's Chess 2.3 (Hendricks, David and Bell,
  9.                                | John T.; $15) was at one time the very
  10.                                | strongest pd/shareware chess game available.
  11.                                | It can give a hard time to the retail-only
  12.                                | game Chessmaster and to most tournament
  13.                                | chess players. PowerChess seems to be just
  14.                                | as strong and has excellent graphics. Ed's
  15.                                | Chess is still a good game and its board
  16.                                | makes very good use of ASCII graphics. Since
  17.                                | it does use ASCII, it will run on any type
  18.                                | of video. The game has many features,
  19.                                | including saving/restoring games, move
  20.                                | take-back, choice of colors, varying levels
  21.                                | of play, recorded time for each move in
  22.                                | saved games, board and game editing, printed
  23.                                | game reports, and much more.
  24. PWRCHESS.ZIP   119168  12-03-93  PowerChess (Wild, W. and Heiss, H.; $35) is
  25.                                | a powerful, full-featured chess program with
  26.                                | excellent graphics. Features include
  27.                                | save/restore games, board edit, opening move
  28.                                | library, take back moves, print move
  29.                                | sequences, play black or white, hints for
  30.                                | learning game, set up checkmate puzzles, and
  31.                                | the ability to adjust the computer's playing
  32.                                | strength by varying its response time from
  33.                                | 10 to 300,000 seconds. We experienced some
  34.                                | oddities on our VGA system: the first time
  35.                                | we ran it, the Hints and the Information
  36.                                | screens were both blank. The next time we
  37.                                | ran it, they displayed information, but both
  38.                                | screens were the same. We had no problems
  39.                                | with the actual play of the game, however.
  40.                                | The author is no longer at the address

  42. TRID.COM         5528  08-21-89  Star Trek Tridemensional Chess (Rutan, David
  43.                                | E.; $0) tells you how to construct a 3D
  44.                                | chess set like the one on the old Star Trek
  45.                                | series and how to play the game.
  46. TELCHES.COM     45834  08-21-89  Telechess lets two people play chess over
  47.                                | the phone. The opponent's move is
  48.                                | automatically displayed on the screen.
  49. WAXMAN.EXE      30753  10-17-91  WaxMan 1.1 (Bacigal, Ivan; $10) is a
  50.                                | surprisingly strong pop-up chess game. Since
  51.                                | it is a TSR, you can pop it up at any time
  52.                                | to play a few moves. Its use of ASCII
  53.                                | characters to represent the pieces is clever
  54.                                | and very well done.
  55. CHESSCLB.EXE    69698  04-01-89  ChessClb 2.55 (Wharry, Stephen; $5) keeps
  56.                                | track of a chess club's roster and
  57.                                | statistics for two rating systems. Each
  58.                                | rating system includes a club rating for
  59.                                | each member, the total number of points
  60.                                | accumulated, and the total number of games
  61.                                | played. CHESSCLB will also keep track of who
  62.                                | played whom, when, the result, their ratings
  63.                                | at the time and how many rating points were
  64.                                | earned/lost. The roster and statistics lists
  65.                                | can be sorted by ratings, total number of
  66.                                | games, total points scored, ID number, name,
  67.                                | or address. The program is fast, menu-driven
  68.                                | and easy to use.
  69. CHS_GEMS.ZIP   223554  12-07-93  Chess Gems & Jewels (Pep-Cal Software; $15
  70.                                | each) Gems is a collection of 12 chess games
  71.                                | from the world's best players that

  88.                                | learning the game of chess fun. Quizzes
  89.                                | include an introduction to chess, the
  90.                                | Sicilian defense, king pawn openings, queen
  91.                                | pawn openings, and the English opening.
  92. CHSSPERL.ZIP   112980  11-20-93  Chess Pearls (Pep-Cal Software; $15) is a
  93.                                | set of 12 lessons drawn from the best short
  94.                                | games of the old masters of Chess.
  95. CHESSEDT.ZIP    84916  12-07-93  Chessedt (Wharry, Stephen; $10) will allow
  96.                                | you to build a personal database of chess
  97.                                | games, checking for notation errors as you
  98.                                | go. You can store the chess games as files
  99.                                | and bring them back into the program and
  100.                                | examine them at any position in the game,
  101.                                | which is especially useful for postal chess
  102.                                | players. Besides printer output, the game
  103.                                | and annotation can be output to a normal
  104.                                | ASCII file that can then be imported into
  105.                                | the text editor of your choice. You can
  106.                                | build a table of openings and your
  107.                                | success/failure with these openings. It will
  108.                                | allow you to build a list based on openings,
  109.                                | score, tournament, color, date, opponent,
  110.                                | ratings, and more. In this list you may
  111.                                | include as few as one and as many as every
  112.                                | game you have ever played. The program will
  113.                                | allow up to 100 moves and replies and up to
  114.                                | 50 annotation strings per game. Now the
  115.                                | tricky part - it took quite a bit of head
  116.                                | banging to figure out how to enter moves.
  117.                                | The documentation is sketchy on this and
  118.                                | gives no examples. To move a pawn, just give
  119.                                | the target square, such as "e4". To move a
  120.                                | piece, first give the letter of the piece
  121.                                | "in uppercase", then give the target square
  122.                                | "in lowercase". Example: to move White's
  123.                                | King's Bishop to Queen-Bishop-4, enter
  124.                                | "Bc4". To capture with a Pawn, enter the
  125.                                | starting "column" and the target " square".

  146.                                | on-screen chess board as you enter them.
  147.                                | Descriptive or algebraic notation can be
  148.                                | used. You can load a database and step
  149.                                | through a game a move at a time, seeing the
  150.                                | moves displayed and reading the analysis and
  151.                                | alternative moves. You can also add your own
  152.                                | alternative moves and analysis to the
  153.                                | database at the same time.
  154. DIACHES.ZIP    109189  07-23-92  DiaChess 1.0 (TNT Software; $20) allows you
  155.                                | to record and print complete chess games
  156.                                | with a diagram for every move. It's a
  157.                                | valuable teaching and study tool for serious
  158.                                | players and ideal for printing a permanent
  159.                                | record of tournament games.

  199.                                | chess puzzle that requires placing 8 queens
  200.                                | on a chessboard in such a way that none
  201.                                | threatens another. (Two queens on the same
  202.                                | row, in the same column, or on the same
  203.                                | diagonal `threaten' each other) You don't
  204.                                | have to know anything about chess to try to
  205.                                | solve the puzzle. All necessary instructions
  206.                                | will appear in the form of messages and
  207.                                | prompts.
  208. TAKEN671.ZIP    72454  09-15-93  TakeNote 6.7.1 [Katelansky, David; $10] is a
  209.                                | study tool for chess. It allows you to enter
  210.                                | multiple lines of play in one game and
  211.                                | easily switch among various lines. You can
  212.                                | also add notes and go through notes of the
  213.                                | game without losing the original position. A
  214.                                | tutorial is included.
  215. TRANSLAT.ZIP    90319  11-20-93  Chess Translator (Pep-Cal; $15) translates
  216.                                | opening moves into both the descriptive and
  217.                                | the algebraic equivalents as well as showing
  218.                                | the moves on screen. The Pep-Cal chess
  219.                                | programs use ASCII characters to display the
  220.                                | board and pieces, so they do not look
  221.                                | impressive, but they will work on any
  222.                                | monitor.
  223. BLITZ.EXE       40843  06-17-93  Blitz 3.6 (PC Solutions; $24) is a very
  224.                                | strong game of checkers with many options.
  225.                                | You can resize the checker board, alter the
  226.                                | response time, show movable pieces, select
  227.                                | two-player mode and more.
  228. CHECKJM.EXE     93170  04-05-90  Checkers 1.61 (McCranie, Judson ASP; $15) is
  229.                                | the best checkers game we have seen for the
  230.                                | PC. It has excellent graphics and plays a
  231.                                | good game. You can select colors and the
  232.                                | level of strength at which the computer
  233.                                | should play.
  234. CHKR_PF.COM     34097  05-28-90  Checkers (Franchuk, Peter; $0) lets you play
  235.                                | checkers against the computer. The program
  236.                                | is not very strong, but the complete Turbo
  237.                                | Pascal source code is included. If you are a
  238.                                | TP programmer, you may have more fun with
  239.                                | the source code than with the game. EGA
  240.                                | compatible video is required.
  241. CHEKKER.EXE     70151  03-26-92  Chekkers 1.7 (Shewchuk, J.D.; $15) is an
  242.                                | excellent version of checkers. It features
  243.                                | several levels of play, your choice of Hoyle
  244.                                | or Huff jump rules. Sound can be toggled
  245.                                | on/off. You can flip the board to change
  246.                                | sides and record game and board information.
  247. CHEXO.ZIP       85477  11-21-93  Chexo 1.0 (Soleau Software; $12) is a
  248.                                | strategy board game similar to checkers
  249.                                | except that you can only move a piece by
  250.                                | jumping over another piece of yours or the
  251.                                | opponent's. If you jump the opponent's, that
  252.                                | piece is removed. The object is to remove
  253.                                | all the opponent's pieces. Requires EGA/VGA
  254.                                | and a mouse.
  255. DYNAMO.EXE      35899  06-18-93  Dynamo Draughts 5.9 (PC Solutions; $24) is
  256.                                | the European version of Draughts, a variant
  257.                                | of checkers. Draughts is played on a 10x10
  258.                                | board, although this program allows you to
  259.                                | resize the board. One major difference
  260.                                | between Draughts and Checkers is the way a
  261.                                | king moves. Kings can move along an entire
  262.                                | diagonal, leaping opponents, landing on any
  263.                                | space beyond the opponent, and then taking
  264.                                | further leaps in different directions. You
  265.                                | can select the board size, number of men,
  266.                                | response time, auto-play, computer IQ,
  267.                                | corner shapes and more.
  268. BATLSHIP.ZIP   110162  11-20-93  BattleShip 2.3 (SimoneSystems Software; $15)
  269.                                | is a computerized version of BattleShip with
  270.                                | a twist. It features islands, mine sweeping,
  271.                                | submerge submarine, moving spy ship, and
  272.                                | more. Requires 286+ and mouse.
  273. WARSHIPS.ZIP   117919  11-20-93  Warships 2.5 (Tag Software; $15) is a
  274.                                | computerized version of the game Battleship.
  275.                                | You play against the computer, trying to
  276.                                | sink its ships before it sinks yours. It
  277.                                | features sound effects, nice EGA/VGA
  278.                                | graphics, and mouse control.
  279. ANTIC.EXE       73032  04-16-92  AntiC 1.11 (Cascoly Software ASP; $20) is a
  280.                                | cross between Othello and Life. The object
  281.                                | of AntiC is make the pattern a single color
  282.                                | color using the fewest number of
  283.                                | transformations. Each square is one of three
  284.                                | colors and sends its color to neighboring
  285.                                | squares in the network. If only one color
  286.                                | comes into a square, it takes that color. If
  287.                                | two colors come in, they cancel and the
  288.                                | square assumes the third color. Each time
  289.                                | you change a square, all squares in the
  290.                                | pattern are recalculated and redrawn.
  291.                                | Requires EGA monitor and mouse.
  292. APPLES.ZIP      99924  11-20-93  Apples & Oranges (Expert Source Code, Inc.;
  293.                                | $15) is the game of Othello using apples and
  294.                                | oranges rather than the usual black and
  295.                                | white pieces. Unfortunately, the program
  296.                                | plays a rather weak game, but the graphics
  297.                                | are unbeatable. So it's not that much fun to
  298.                                | play, but it's great for showing off your
  299.                                | video. Three levels of play are offered.
  300.                                | Requires EGA or VGA, 355k RAM and a mouse.
  301. BLOCKAD.ZIP     15491  06-17-93  Blockade 1.9 (PC Solutions; $15) is a
  302.                                | strategy board game similar to Othello. Each
  303.                                | player takes turns placing his pieces on the
  304.                                | board, but unlike Othello, your piece must
  305.                                | be placed adjacent to both one of your
  306.                                | pieces and one of your opponent's. The
  307.                                | effects of such a placement differ from
  308.                                | Othello as well. An interesting game.
  309. CAPTRCW.COM     60911  10-22-89  Capture 2.0 (CurtWare; $10) is similar to
  310.                                | Othello. The main difference is that you can
  311.                                | select a greater number of squares, up to
  312.                                | 400. You can play a friend or the computer,
  313.                                | or let the computer play itself. There are
  314.                                | three skill levels, but the strongest is not
  315.                                | as strong as other Othello type games in the
  316.                                | PsL. The program is easy to use and has lots
  317.                                | of features, such as being able to save a
  318.                                | game.
  319. DOUBOLO.COM     60561  04-23-90  DoublOlo (Soleau, William; $10) is the best
  320.                                | thing to happen to Othello since the
  321.                                | two-colored disc! While many programmers
  322.                                | have written "yet another rendition" of the
  323.                                | classic game of Othello (some of them with
  324.                                | excellent graphics and/or playing skill),
  325.                                | William Soleau, who has been writing a lot
  326.                                | of terrific games recently, has come up with
  327.                                | another winner. In this variation, the board
  328.                                | varies in size and shape and location of
  329.                                | obstacles on the board with each game. This
  330.                                | endless variety and different challenges is
  331.                                | sure to please anyone who has ever enjoyed a
  332.                                | game of Othello but who has grown bored with
  333.                                | the same old game all the time. Requires
  334.                                | EGA/VGA.
  335. FLIP_IT.ZIP     33077  02-18-93  Flip-It 4.7 (PC Solutions; $15-$24) is an
  336.                                | interesting variation of Reversi/Othello.
  337.                                | You can select various grid patterns and
  338.                                | sizes for the board. There is also an
  339.                                | unusual play-to-lose mode. Function keys can
  340.                                | provide help and rules or invoke an
  341.                                | auto-play feature.
  342. HEXES.EXE       54100  04-22-93  Hexes 0.93 (Foltz, H.D.; $0) is an Othello
  343.                                | game played on a hexagonal board.
  344. OTHL_EW.ZIP     70660  02-24-90  Othello 6.2 (Waud, Earl; $20) is an good
  345.                                | implementation of Othello for EGA or mono
  346.                                | systems. It has seven levels of play; can be
  347.                                | played by one or two players; has mouse
  348.                                | support and a "boss screen". This is not the
  349.                                | strongest Othello we've seen, but the user
  350.                                | interface is above average and the program
  351.                                | is strong enough to beat the non-expert.

  354. REVERSI.COM     63655  06-24-89  Reversi 1.8 (Parson, David; $15) is an
  355.                                | excellent version of Othello that supports
  356.                                | CGA or EGA/VGA compatible video. It may be
  357.                                | the strongest of the bunch.
  358. TRIBOLO.ZIP     86630  12-09-93  Tribolo (Soleau, William; $12) pits you
  359.                                | against two computer opponents in a game of
  360.                                | three way Othello. The regular rules of
  361.                                | Othello apply, but having three participants
  362.                                | creates drastically different playing
  363.                                | strategies. Tribolo has excellent EGA
  364.                                | graphics and mouse support.
  365. TEGL1.ZIP      154359  07-26-93  The Big Games Package (TEGL Systems
  366.                                | Corporation; $35) is a set of five different
  367.                                | games for EGA/VGA: Monopoly, Mahjong
  368.                                | Solitaire, Klondike Solitaire, Mille Bornes
  369.                                | and Big2.

  373. BACKGMM.COM     33650  08-21-89  Backgammon is just an electronic board and

  375.                                | opponent. The computer will not play you.
  376. BACKTDM.EXE     48121  11-15-91  Backgammon 5.1 (The Dream Machine; $12) is a
  377.                                | challenging version of the ancient board
  378.                                | game. It offers a multitude of playing
  379.                                | options and includes 10 levels of
  380.                                | difficulty. Pieces are moved by typing in
  381.                                | the position number you want to play. You
  382.                                | can save and recall games, switch sides
  383.                                | during play, take back moves, use a doubling
  384.                                | cube, have the computer suggest moves, and
  385.                                | much more. The program does not offer mouse
  386.                                | support, and it can be a nuisance to type in
  387.                                | numbers to move a piece. During testing, it
  388.                                | aborted to DOS when trying to save a game.
  389.                                | Despite these flaws, we believe it is the
  390.                                | strongest backgammon game in the library.
  391. BG.COM          38603  08-21-89  BG is a very good backgammon program. Moving
  392.                                | the blots is not exactly difficult, but it
  393.                                | could have been made easier to do. The
  394.                                | author warns you to expect to get crushed,
  395.                                | but it was not the strongest game in our
  396.                                | testing.
  397. BACKGAM.COM     57085  08-22-89  Backgammon is a backgammon game that is very
  398.                                | awkward to play, but which comes with
  399.                                | complete C source code. Even if you are not
  400.                                | a programmer, it is interesting to look at
  401.                                | the source and read the comments. If you ARE
  402.                                | a programmer, you should find the code to be
  403.                                | educational.
  404. BACK_JG.COM     40433  01-16-90  BackGammon (BACK (Gatewood, Joe; $0) is a
  405.                                | CGA version of BackGammon, with doubling
  406.                                | cube, graphics and running game score. It
  407.                                | plays a decent game, but no option is given
  408.                                | for turning off the annoying sounds.
  409. EGAGAM.EXE      85497  06-07-90  EGAGammon 2.0 (Evans, Daniel R.; $10) is a
  410.                                | beautifully done version of Backgammon for
  411.                                | the EGA/VGA. You play the computer or a
  412.                                | human opponent. Mouse or keyboard may be
  413.                                | used by the first player.
  414. PCGAMMON.ZIP   129316  11-21-93  PC-Gammon IV 1.1 (Repstad Computer
  415.                                | Consultants ASP; $25) is the best shareware
  416.                                | backgammon game to date. (We called to
  417.                                | register as soon as we finished reviewing
  418.                                | it!) It plays a very good game, but really
  419.                                | shines when it comes to the user interface.
  420.                                | In addition, you can save and restore games,
  421.                                | write a log of all moves to disk, and
  422.                                | customize set-up positions. Other features
  423.                                | include three user-selectable playing
  424.                                | strengths, three levels of AutoMove, and
  425.                                | modem play.
  426. HKMJ.EXE        78727  10-17-89  Hong Kong Mahjong (Fitch, Julian; $15) is a
  427.                                | version of Mahjong as played in Hong Kong.
  428.                                | It has excellent graphics because it is
  429.                                | written to run only on the VGA. Directions
  430.                                | are provided when you run the program. VGA
  431.                                | required.
  432. MAH_PK.EXE      72657  11-28-89  Mahjong 4.1 (King, P. E. ASP; $20) is the
  433.                                | game of Mahjong solitaire.
  434. MAHJNG.EXE     198672  09-17-93  Mah Jongg 4.1 (Anderson, Nels ASP; $10) is a
  435.                                | solitaire game played with Chinese tiles.
  436.                                | The "Boss Mode" allows you to Shell to DOS
  437.                                | to run other programs. A list of all pairs
  438.                                | of tiles played so far is available by
  439.                                | hitting the F2 key. You also have the
  440.                                | ability to load different tile sets. One
  441.                                | additional set, "Flags of the World", is
  442.                                | included along with a tile editor utility.
  443. MJLAPTP.EXE     60390  08-23-92  Mah Jongg LapTop 1.1 (Balewski, Ron; $15) is
  444.                                | a version of Mah Jongg written with black
  445.                                | and white graphics so that the tiles can be
  446.                                | easily identifiable on laptops and other
  447.                                | systems without color monitors. This is a
